I think any fiction can benefit from the use of relevant lyrics. They can evoke memories and feelings from long ago, and in a best case scenario, connect the reader more closely to the character(s) involved. So at several points in the book, I tried to include meaningful lyrics.
What I didn't do was reach out and try to obtain the permission of the copyright holders. It was one more mistake I made because I just didn't know.
So I axed the lyrics and tried to suggest them by using the name of the artist/the name of the song. I plan to start writing seriously again no later than October. You can bet I'll pursue those permissions as I write.
In any case, there were several songs mentioned in The Trumansburg Project. I love each one. Here they are.
An American Trilogy, by Elvis Presley, page 157
I Am . . . I Said, by Neil Diamond, page 243
Kind and Generous, by Natalie Merchant, page 361
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, by Mel Carter, page 335
As always, Thanks for reading! I’ll be back next week with a few ideas for those writing (or thinking of writing) their own books.
PS If you happen to read The Trumansburg Project, a Amazon review would be HUGELY appreciated!
